The Alternative Medicine Sourcebook describes “alternative medicine” as healing practices that do “not fall within the realm of conventional medicine.” Critics claim that the effectiveness of alternative medicine is negligible, but many turn to it as a practical treatment for their ailments, often in conjunction with conventional medicine. Business is good, and practitioners are in demand. Here are a few fields that those interested in alternative medicine careers can pursue.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture treats patients via the insertion or manipulation of needles in the body. The ancient practice originated in China and is used to relieve pain, promote health, and some claim that it can prevent disease and improve fertility.

Chiropractics: This field of alternative medicine focuses on diagnosing and treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Treatments involve manual therapy of joints or of the spine and certain exercises.

Iridology: This somewhat controversial alternative medicine involves diagnosing physical ailments by thoroughly examining the eye. Treatments then generally include homeopathy or herbal medication.

Naturopathy: Naturopathy involves encouraging the body’s natural ability to heal and not relying on surgery or medication. Treatments include, but are not limited to, acupuncture, massage, kinesiology, iridology, enemas, vitamins, and a variety of other therapies.

Those interested in careers in medicine alternatives generally need some sort of specific education or training. This can be gained from classes, study, apprenticing or through specialized institutions like chiropractic schools. A lot of people are either wary of chemicals or in favor of more natural treatments and will need professionals in the field of alternative medicine to help them.

Are you Making Mistakes with Herbal Remedies? Pt 6

When it comes to taking herbs, you may actually be unwittingly making a mistake that could potentially harm your health. Here is a look at one of the biggest mistakes that you could be making when it comes to taking herbs.

Are you making sure that you are taking your herbal supplements every single day, or otherwise on a consistent basis?

It is vitally important that you take your herbs and your supplements regularly as is recommended by the manufacturer in order for you to assess if they are actually working for you or not. One of the biggest mistakes that people make is that they begin to take an herb or a supplement, then they skip a day, and then they skip two days, and then after a while they believe that they have not seen any improvement and so they either stop taking the supplement all together, or they add other supplements in because they believe the first one was not working.

The fact of the matter is, you have to be consistent in taking your herbal remedies and supplements in order to tell whether or not they are actually working for you. One of the best ways that you can achieve this is by purchasing a daily pill organizer so that you can tell whether or not you have taken your supplement for the day. This will ensure that you stay on track. Keeping a pill organizer within reach will ensure that you really, truly benefit from the vitamins and supplements that you buy.

Are you Making Mistakes with Herbal Remedies? Pt 5

When it comes to taking herbs, you may actually be unwittingly making a mistake that could potentially harm your health. Here is a look at one of the biggest mistakes that you could be making when it comes to taking herbs.

Are you being honest with your doctor about the herbs and the supplements that you are taking? One of the biggest mistakes that people make is that they take supplements and herbs directly before or directly after having surgery without telling the surgeon about them. Your surgeon absolutely has to know about any herbs and any supplements that you are taking in order to prevent any complications from occurring. These types of herbs and supplements can actually interact with your anaesthetic, and it could potentially cause an excessive amount of bleeding.

There are certain herbs and supplements that you are simply going to want to stop taking at least two to three weeks before your surgery, including the following: Vitamin E, valerian root, licorice, St John’s Wort, kava kava, chamomile, goldenseal, ephedra, ma huang, feverfew, danshen, omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil, flax seed oil, saw palmetto, coenzyme q10, glucosamine, ginger, chondroitin, ginseng, ginkgo and garlic.

Above all else, it is vitally important that your physician always know what you are taking in terms of herbs and supplements so that he or she can help you choose the right treatments and the right medications accordingly. It is important always to be honest with your physician about what you are taking to ensure that you are always in good health.

Are you Making Mistakes with Herbal Remedies? Pt 4

When it comes to taking herbs, you may actually be unwittingly making a mistake that could potentially harm your health. Here is a look at one of the biggest mistakes that you could be making when it comes to taking herbs.

One of the biggest mistakes that you can make pertaining to herbs and herbal remedies is taking dieter’s teas and herbal laxatives thinking that it is going to induce regularity in your bowel movements. The herbs that are found in products such as these are known as anthranoid laxatives, and they include buckthorn, senna, aloe, rhubarb and cascara sagrada.

People that use these products can actually become unnecessarily dependent, and may end up using them for days, weeks, months or years longer than they are supposed to. Stimulant laxative chemicals like senna should never be used for a period longer than a week, unless you have express permission from your physician or some other licensed health care provider. When you use products such as these for an extended period of time, then it may cause your bowels to have difficulty moving all on their own. People who have taken these laxatives for too long a period of time have ended up with chronic diarrhea issues along with irregular heart rhythms, muscle weakness, liver impairment and kidney impairment.

Make sure that you talk with your primary health care provider about being able to wean off of laxatives in a gradual manner so that you can recover your normal bowel function again. The big key here is going to be to go about the process slowly, typically combined with taking a fiber supplement and making sure that you also get enough fluids as well.

Are you Making Mistakes with Herbal Remedies? Pt 3

When it comes to taking herbs, you may actually be unwittingly making a mistake that could potentially harm your health. Here is a look at one of the biggest mistakes that you could be making when it comes to taking herbs.

There are herbs, drugs and supplements that when you decide to take them together, you may actually be putting yourself at risk of bleeding. Certain types of medications known as anticoagulant drugs like warfarin and aspirin are blood thinners. What this means is that they are designed to keep blood clots from forming inside of your arteries. Their purpose is to reduce the risk for developing heart disease or a stroke. However, it is vitally important that you understand that when you combine these medications with supplements and herbs that are also capable of promoting the anticoagulant effect, then you can significantly increase the risk of bleeding and causing serious harm to your body.

Some of these herbs and supplements include willow bark, fish oil, dong quai, devil’s claw, goji, saw palmetto, ginseng, gingko, ginger, garlic, feverfew, danshen, coenzyme q10, chamomile and aloe vera. While these are all natural supplements that are generally healthy for you, they can cause a bad reaction when mixed with anticoagulant drugs. If you happen to be taking more than one of the aforementioned herbs, or if you are taking an anticoagulant drug, then you are going to want to consult your physician so that you can determine the best course of action from here on out. Make sure that your physician always knows what herbal remedies you are taking when a new medication is prescribed in order to ensure your good health.

Are you Making Mistakes with Herbal Remedies?

When it comes to taking herbs, you may actually be unwittingly making a mistake that could potentially harm your health. Here is a look at one of the biggest mistakes that you could be making when it comes to taking herbs.

Are you turning to natural products like herbs in order to boost your energy “naturally” because you are feeling tired all the time?

If you are feeling weary, tired or completely lacking energy on a constant basis, then you should visit your primary care physician rather than just attempting to mask the symptoms with a trip to your local health food store. Although supplements and good diet can be beneficial in some circumstances, your absolute first step is going to need to be to ensure that the cause of your fatigue is not some kind of underlying condition. There are actually a number of different conditions that are capable of presenting themselves in this manner, including depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, sleeping disorders like obstructive sleep apnea, asthma and anemia. It is important that you rule all of things out before trying to change your situation using herbal remedies and other health supplements.

Fatigue is also a symptom of a number of other conditions including some infectious diseases, diabetes, heart failure, liver disease, kidney disease, Addison’s disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases such as lupus, malnutrition and a side effect from taking certain medications. As such, it is important that you go and visit your primary health care provider first. Your physician will ask you some questions, ensuring that the right examination and tests are done so that these conditions can be ruled out and you can figure out what is actually causing the tired feelings.

How to Use Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is also known as Melissa officinalis, and it is an herb that is used fairly regularly for the treatment of stress and anxiety. This essential herb is actually a member belonging to the mint family. It contains what are known as terpenes, and these are chemicals that are thought to be capable of producing a relaxing effect. There are a number of potential uses for this lemon balm herb. Some of the common health claims that lemon balm is applied to are going to include the prevention or the treatment of the following conditions: Heartburn, indigestion, genital herpes, cold sores, insomnia and anxiety.

There have not been very many scientific studies to date that have focused on any health benefits that are associated with lemon balm. Despite this, findings from the currently available research are suggesting that this herb is definitely showing promise in the treatment of a number of things. Because of its antiviral properties, lemon balm can be used to treat cold sores for example. Lemon balm may also be capable of benefiting people that are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, at least according to a study from back in 2003. Additionally, lemon balm has been recommended for the treatment of insomnia, anxiety and a number of other conditions as well. Lemon balm is generally going to be considered to be safe, but it can interact with some medications and so you should not attempt using it as a supplement without first speaking to your physician.

You can generally purchase lemon balm in a capsule, tincture or tea form depending on personal preference. Make sure when making lemon balm tea that you keep the steam in, because it is thought to contain all of the therapeutic aromatic oils of the herb.

Using Essential Oils Daily

Essential oils and aromatherapy have been proven in some studies to benefit the body and overall health in different ways. There are hundreds of different essential oils that are said to be capable of enhancing health, but that does not mean that every one of them has been studied in depth to explore the beneficial effects. The current research regarding aromatherapy is somewhat limited, but some essential oils have so far proven themselves capable of helping in the treatment of specific conditions.

Lemon, for example, is said to be capable of improving your mood when you breathe in its scent. This is according to a study from 2008 that tested 56 volunteers. Studies have also showed, however, that lemon oil does not lower blood pressure, ease pain or lessen stress. A study in 2009 indicated that animals inhaling linalool from lemon essential oil decreased their stress-elevated immune cell levels.

Another essential oil that has proven itself capable of working is lavender. People say that lavender has a sedative effect, and so it has proven itself capable of relieving anxiety and lessening insomnia in several different studies. One study was published in 2007 that showed lavender to be capable of alleviating agitated behaviors in older adults suffering from dementia.

Tea tree oil has been used for a very long time in folk medicine for the purpose of treating burns, cuts, infections and a number of other skin conditions. It may also be capable of killing Staphylococcus aureus, the bacteria that is responsible for causing staph infections, at least according to a report from 2009. Other studies have showed that tea tree oil can be effective in treating a number of other conditions including dandruff, athlete’s foot and warts.

Another worthwhile essential oil is rosemary. If you sniff rosemary for five minutes you can experience a decrease in a stress hormone known as cortisol, according to a study that was conducted in 2007.

Yohimbe is a substance that can be found inside the bark of evergreen trees that are located in Western Africa. The specific species of evergreen tree in which this herb originates is called pausinystalia yohimbe, and is nearly extinct due to pharmaceutical companies over harvesting their natural habitat for the erectile dysfunction remedy the herb provides. The yohimbe provides many additional attributes that have yet to be researched effectively enough, however.

For hundreds of years, the yohimbe bark has been used to battle fevers and disease in Cameroon. Addtionally, it was used often in tea form for various marriage and mating celebrations, as well as ingested by warriors prior to a nearing battle for an energy boost.

The small amount of yohimbe that has been restricted by cultivation in West Africa has allowed research to be conducted on this mysterious herb. Thus far, findings present themselves as proving the yohimbe herb can: improve overall sexual function, particularly in men, reduce and even prevent heart attacks, assist in the reduction of anxiety and improve muscle function while simultaneously building muscle mass. The enhancements this herb provides are extremely promising and scientists are optimistic that further research will bring to light a barrage of additional benefits.

Unfortunately, with the over emphasis on this herb as a modern cure for impotence, pharmaceutical companies might bring the yohimbe tree to extinction before research can reveal all of the health benefits of the yohimbe herb. The latest research of this mysterious herb has placed an emphasis on the prospective heart health attributes it presents. However, one finding has implied that yohimbe vastly increases blood flow to the extremities which can be a flawless way to improve brain function, heart function and help prevent heart disease; but this effect ironically, can be dangerous for people with pre-existing heart conditions due to the sudden changes in blood pressure.

Energy healing is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Chinese and others who practice traditional medicine believe that energy healing removes blockages from the energy paths in the body. These energy pathways are known as meridians. Energy healing is used upon the energy centers of the body called Chakras. Areas of the body that correspond with Chakra energy centers include the top of the head, between the eyebrows, the throat and solar plexus, stomach area, heart, and base of the spine. Each of these areas are identified by a specific color.

The Chakra located at the top of the head corresponds with the color purple and is associated with spirituality. Indigo is the color assigned to the Chakra between the eyes. Psychic abilities are associated with this Chakra. The blue Chakra of the throat is associated with communication. The solar plexus Chakra is the center of our emotions and is yellow in color. The Chakra of the stomach area is represented by the color orange and is the center of creativity. The green Chakra area of the heart controls the immune system. The red Chakra at the base of the spine represents security.

The human body is its own energy field. The energy field of the body reacts to the sources of energy surrounding it. In the practice of energy healing, the human hand is the tool used during the healing process. The healers hands will travel the meridian pathways and identify blocked area. The energy force from the hands of the healer will clear the blocked areas and restore balance in the patient.

Energy healing is a good method for healing pain. This type of Chinese medicine is especially effective on pain in the areas of the back and neck. The healing properties also benefit ailments of the internal organs. Phsycological and spiratual issues are also areas that are well addressed by energy healing. When concerned about illness or seeking balance choose energy healing.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, good health is associated with the balance of yin and yang within the body system. Yin is identified with the life force of blood and yang is associated with energy. Disease is believed to be caused by the energy within these systems being blocked or out of balance. The practice of acupuncture uses needles inserted in specific areas of the body. Acupuncture is used to treat illness and provide therapy. Many practitioners support the use of acupuncture for treatment of disease, pain and infertility. The practice of acupuncture is considered an alternative type of medicine.

Acupuncture is based on the belief that blocked or insufficient energy can be unblocked and provided by the placement and manipulation of needles along the meridian path of the body. The energy path of the meridian locations are believed to be the points that are areas for healing using acupuncture. The points chosen along the meridian path are based on mystical Chinese beliefs. The main acupuncture points used are the twelve main meridian pathways and two of the eight extra meridian paths.

A visit to an acupuncturist will include an examination and discussion with the practitioner. Based on the results of the examination the acupuncturist will decide which pressure points to treat. Modern acupuncturists will utilize fine diameter stainless steel needles for the treatment. The depth of insertion will be dependent upon the style of treatment used. Warming an acupuncture point with herbs prior to insertion into a pressure point may be used as a supplement to the treatment. A large majority of areas require acupuncture needles to be sterile, disposable to be used only once and then discarded.

A majority of people beleive that accupuncture is an effective form of treatment and would visit an accupuncturist. A large number of insurance plans cover the cost of acupuncture treatments making it an available option for many.

Acne is widely considered a scourge of the teen years, but some people suffer from it all their lives. Nearly 80% of teenagers have acne in some form or severity, while older acne victims face periodic outbreaks. It is well known that acne is a skin condition characterized by the abnormal functioning of oil glands in the skin. Sebum is prevented from travelling up the hair follicle, and accumulates to form a breeding ground for bacteria. Causes range from heredity to environmental conditions to medications and food habits.

Modern medicine has a variety of treatments for acne, including topical ointments, antibiotics, accutane, corticosteroids, and dermabrasion. Some of these treatments can have severe side effects, and even create new problems of their own. Antibiotics can hinder the effect of other medications, and cause digestive disorders. Accutane is a very controversial mode of treatment, especially for women, since it contributes quite significantly to fetal malformations. Corticosteroids can suppress the immune system and trigger a number of allergies in the user.

Quite understandably, many acne sufferers look for alternative options and health medicines or systems to cure their condition. Traditional Chinese medicine has emerged as a popular choice of treatment for acne. As with all other ailments, Chinese medicine views acne as the result of an internal imbalance. Acne is seen as the outcome of excess heat and toxins in the body, and Chinese therapy tries to cure it by reducing the heat and eliminating toxins.

Treatment is characterized by the search for an underlying factor, as Chinese medicine aims to control the root cause and not the external outcome. Practitioners prescribe herbal medicines in custom doses via pills, tinctures, herbal teas, and powders. This is often supplemented by a controlled diet that aims to eliminate excess heat from the body by cooling the blood. Foods like watermelon, cherries, lettuce, squash, and cabbage are a good supplement to acne medication. When taken in correct doses under supervision, Chinese medicines have virtually no side effects.

Chinese medicine is a good option for anybody seeking a lasting cure from acne, since it promotes a healthy change in lifestyle and food habits.

Listening to music is an integral part of many of our lives. It soothes our soul when the work day has been long. It gives us energy when our spirits or physical being is tired. It is tied to our most important rituals such as marriages and funerals. What most people do not realize though is music heals.

Music therapy is a legitimate medical treatment for a variety of ailments and has been around for nearly fifty years. It is administered by credentialed professionals, who have been referred by your doctor. It is well researched and recommended for stroke victims, epilepsy patients, and Alzheimer’s patients.

Stroke

A 2008 Finnish study published in the February 20th issue of the Brain involved 54 patients, who had various types of strokes. One group was given audio books to listen to for a few hours of the day, the control group received the standard treatments, and a third group listened to music for a set time. The group that listened to music had significant improvement in focusing attention and concentration.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which a person’s brain has an electrical storm. Dr. Sidorenko did a study, where they assessed the effectiveness of Medical Resonance Therapy Music done on severe epileptic patients in which medication was not being effective. He found that the frequency and severity of the attacks were reduced as much as 75 percent.

Alzeheimers

Alzeheimers is not only devastating to the person that has the disease, but also to the ones closest to them. The ailment breaks the relationship between partners as
the patient loses the ability to interact with their spouse and loved ones. At the University of Queensland a project by Dr. Felicity Baker sent music therapists to the home and trained the spouse how to use music and dance to facilitate conversation. This provided a means of interacting and maintaining relationships.

Music therapy does much to improve a patient’s quality of life.

TCM is known as Traditional Chinese Medicine. That phrase usually conjures up visions of a half dressed person with needles sticking out of various parts of their body. There is a more to TCM than acupuncture. TCM has thousands of years of history for some of its remedies, and it also includes the use of herbs, massage, exercise and diet.

It is widely known that many Western drugs come from plant extracts. Research has all has proven diet and exercise have an impact on health. It is no less in TCM. TCM has a holistic approach and involves a philosophy. Practitioners of Chinese medicine view the mind, body, and spirit as a whole. Treatments address all three of those areas. Health is viewed as a balance between the general principle of Yin and Yang.

What is Yin and Yang? Yin is considered female energy and is found in the solid organs such has heart, liver, or lung. Yang is considered male energy and is found in hollow organs such as intestines, gall bladder, and stomach. Illness and disease is thought to happen when the two get out of balance. TCM seeks to restore the balance. In addition, to Yin and Yang there is the idea of Qi (pronounce chee). Qi is about energy, and how your energy moves throughout your body and is used. If Qi is blocked, then illness or disease can result.

Diagnosis of an ailment involves an interview, pulse exam, and tongue examination. The interview has questions about dreams, sleep, food, and stress. Pulse exams look for six pulses in each arm. Each kind of pulse gives information about the health of the body. The tongue is considered a reflection of the vital organs and systems of the body. How the tongue looks determines the state of that part of the body.

As more Western research is done on the Chinese remedies, studies do show there is a basis in truth.

Seeing the term “urine therapy” certainly causes a degree of intrigue. Also known as uropathy, urotherapy or urinotherapy, urine therapy is the use of human urine for medical and cosmetic purposes.

Now I’m sure that intrigue has transformed into some expression of disgust.

However, don’t count urine therapy out just yet. While, scientifically, there has been little research done to fully support the effects of urine for medical purposes, there are other uses, like in the nitrogen-based chemical called urea, which is typically made from mammal urine and used as an ingredient in dish soap and as a stabilizer in nitrocellulose explosives

Another example is urokinase. High levels of urokinase in the urine appear to be correlated with the malignancy of a tumor. It is for this reason that researchers are looking into the creation of a drug that inhibits cancer cells. However, the American Cancer Society does not currently support the usage of urine as an anticancer agent, since research is still limited.

Though possibly a wives’ tale, there is some record of individuals using their own urine as an acne treatment, harvesting urine from early morning bathroom breaks, applying it directly to acne (including the face) with a washcloth or brush and then washing their face after it dries. There is no research to support the effectiveness of this acne treatment method.

Modonna has claimed to use urine therapy to help cure athelete’s foot that often occurs frequently in avid dancers. Dolores O’Riordan from The Cranberries claims that urine therapy aided in relieving calluses on her fingers when she first learned to play guitar.

In a September 2007 interview, British actress Sarah Miles claimed to drink her own urine over the past 25 years. She believes it helps her with allergies and has other health benefits. She’s not alone. Other celebrities that have claimed to drinking their own urine include MMA fighter Luke Cummo, author J.D. Salinger and boxer Juan Manuel Marquez.

It’s likely that urine therapy won’t become the next big trend among health fanatics any time soon, since most people can’t get past the smell.

You’re drifting on a large cruise liner across the high seas, and the incessant rocking – rocking – rocking is making your stomach churn in ways you never though imaginable. Among the many recommendations to alleviate the nausea from fellow passengers, someone suggests you wear a magnetic bracelet directly on the veins of your wrist.

At this point you’re willing to try anything, but what do magnets have to do with your unruly stomach?

Also known as magnetic therapy or magnotherapy, magnet therapy is the exposure of the body to static magnetic fields to cure certain conditions, such as nausea.

The claim is that the magnetic field affects the hemoglobin (the oxygen carrying protein) in the blood, since hemoglobin is repelled by magnetic fields. However, experts find this to be highly unlikely, since most of the magnets uses in magnetic therapy are too weak to effect the hemoglobin in any way.

The claimed benefits of magnet therapy range from aiding in the healing process of wounds to simply increasing the wearer’s energy. There are a number of magnetic products available as well, including jewelry, shoe insoles, mattresses, blankets, body creams, vitamins or supplements and magnetized water.

The claimed effects that magnet therapy has on the body, such as increasing and correcting blood flow or effecting the blood’s hemoglobin, are not even observed in the modern medical use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is several times stronger than any of the magnets used in magnet therapy practices. Additionally, studies in both 2008 and 2009 showed that magnet therapy had no effect on the patients.

Still, the industry of magnet therapy products sees over a billion dollars in global sales each year, according to a 2007 report in the Skeptical Inquirer. There’s no use thinking Americans don’t believe in the practice, since $300 million of those annual sales come from the U.S.

However, there is no indication that magnet therapy is harmful in any way either. So, you might as well give that magnetic bracelet a shot and, who knows, maybe it will cure your sea sickness after all.

Fasting is not just something mentioned in the Bible. Many view this abstinence from food, drink or both as not only a spiritual means of meditation, but also as an effective alternative medicine – a means of cleansing the body and starting anew with healthier eating practices.

What someone who is fasting abstains from can vary. While one individual might fast from all food, another individual may just fast from meat for a determined amount of time. Someone who fasts may also exclude certain types of drinks with the exception of water, or may substitute all food with a protein drink. Additionally, the time frame of a fast differs with each individual.

Fasting is sometimes a requirement for certain medical tests performed in modern medicine, but this is actually different from the more spiritually centered approach. In modern medicine, fasting refers to someone who has not eaten overnight (usually a period of 8-12 hours) or the state of the body after a meal is completely absorbed and digested.

Fasting for an extended period of time triggers the body’s “famine response.” The body depends on glucose as the primary source of fuel or energy. After a period of 4-8 hours without food in the body producing glucose, the body starts to glycogen stored in the liver for fuel. After approximately 12 hours of relying upon the glycogen in the liver, the body will start extracting glycogen from muscles. In order to preserve the muscles, the body will turn to fat as a fuel source after a few more days.

While most people end a fast long before complications begins to occur, fasting for too long will cause the body to break down proteins as it moves from the famine response to starvation. Fast-induced starvation can lead to medical problems such as electrolyte imbalance, cardiac arrhythmia and renal failure.

Despite this risk, medical research shows that there are benefits to a controlled fasting approach focusing more on calorie restriction, including decreased risk for cancer, heart problems, diabetes and immune deficiencies. However, experts recommend consulting a doctor before using fasting as diet regimen.

Hydrotherapy is the use of water as a means of treating physical ailments or conditions, including pain. It is most commonly used in spas as a means of promoting relaxation and stress relief.

Spas consider water therapies (another term for hydrotherapy) to include a variety of body treatments including jets and underwater massage techniques, mineral baths, worldpool baths, hot tubs and Jacuzzis, hot Roman baths and cold plunges. With these treatments, the properties of the water are adjusted in order to obtain different effects on the body, such as the temperature and pressure of the water.

One of the more popular public forms of hydrotherapy throughout history is the Turkish bath. Turkish baths used hot water for therapeutic means, using water instead of steam like a sauna. They were most popular during the Victorian era as a means of relaxing and cleansing the body. The process begins with sitting in a warm room where the individual relaxes and begins to perspire. Then the individual moves to the hot room for awhile, splashes himself with cold water, followed by washing the whole body and then receiving a full body massage.

Hydrotherapy stimulates the circulation of the blood throughout the body. In the 1930s to 1950s hydrotherapy saw quite a bit of use as a treatment for alcoholism. It also has a history of use for rheumatic disease. Articles published as recently as June 201 report that hydrotherapy is widely used as a treatment for burn victims, typically in the form of a shower in order to avoid contamination (though full immersion treatments are still in use in some burn units across the nation).

Other than general relaxation of the body (often in tourism heavy spas), a means of relieving sore muscles in professional sports and physical therapy and for burn treatments, hydrotherapy has mostly been replaced in modern medicine by pharmaceutical treatments. It thus falls under the category of alternative medicine in most cases.

Massage therapy dates back nearly 3,000 years, used in Chinese medical practices. It is also documented as used among ancient Hindus, Persians and Egyptians and Hippocrates recommended the use of massage for circulatory problems in many of his papers.

While you won’t often find a doctor that will prescribe a massage, it is still an effective way to manage joint and muscle pain. The practice of massage therapy includes three main techniques.

Massage
Massage itself consists of a variety of techniques applying soft-tissue manipulation (through pressure and friction). The overall goal of massage is to reduce stress and revitalize the body with more energy by promoting circulation throughout the body.

Bodywork
Bodywork consists of a variety of touch therapies that result in changes to the body’s structure with the goal of comfort and pain relief in mind. There are a few bodywork techniques, including repatterning, manipulating or simply moving the body’s soft tissue.

Somatic
The term somatic means “of the body.” This massage therapy technique is the combination of body and mind to overcome pain or ailments, utilizing perspective and attitude as much as body manipulation. The term may also be used to identify a full body massage therapy approach.

According to the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals website, there are more than 250 massage therapy techniques and variations available. The variety of ways to apply massage may include vibration, kneading, stroking, tapping, friction, rocking and pressure to various locations of the body.

Massage therapists often create a relaxing atmosphere by dimming lights, lighting aromatic candles, making the temperature of the room as comfortable as possible and playing soothing music. They also typically use massage oils, lotions or powders to reduce the amount of friction on the body during a massage therapy session.

Someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing can cause problems or worsen your physical pain or ailments. Before seeing a massage therapist, verify that she has some form of training so that you can be certain her techniques will be of great benefit to you.

Meditation encompasses hundreds of techniques and strategies with the goal of obtaining clarity of mind. Some practice meditation as a part of their religious practices, while others believe it to have holistic benefits, helping to keep the body and mind healthy.

The term is very broad however. In fact, an article in Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, published in 2010 by the American Psychological Association, stated that there has been no widespread acceptance of any one clear definition for the word “meditation,” with no persistent agreement on the term throughout any literature covering the topic.

Yoga
Yoga is one form of meditation that has increased in popularity over the years. The word “yoga” stems from “yuj” in Sanskrit, meaning to join or unite. The purpose of yoga practices in that sense is to join the mind and body, unifying them for the benefit of overall health.

Yoga consists of a variety of body positions and stretches, known as poses, in combination with breathing techniques. Some commonly seen positions include the praying mantis, downward dog and the lotus pose.

Concentrative
Concentrative meditation is a means of stilling the mind by focusing on your breathing and an image or sound (known as a mantra). The goal is to increase awareness and clarity, narrowing our focus to a specific field of “vision.” The concentrative method is a great way to reduce stress, anxiety and nervousness, especially in the moment. All you have to do is stop, get comfortable and concentrate on your breathing. You’ll find that doing so can quickly calm you.

Mindful
Mindful meditation has the goal of learning to better understand our senses but refraining to react to them. You work to become more aware of smells, tastes, sounds, images and thoughts, without reacting to them. Unlike the concentrative method, where you focus on only one aspect of the world, the mindful meditation method has the goal of taking in the world as a whole to gain a broader perspective without reacting to everything that goes on around you.

Created in the 1940s by Randolph Stone polarity therapy is an alternative medicine practice that is based in the belief that the humans produce a field of energy that flows from the universe into the body through chakras (force centers of the body).

Polarity therapists seek to restore the balance of energy in the body through touch, verbal interaction, a healthy diet and exercise. As therapists restore the original state of this invisible energy field, then the body is said to go back to its original state of complete health and wellness. People have pain and get sick because their energy field are either out of balance or being blocked in some way.

Those who practice polarity therapy believe that everyone expresses electromagnetic patterns through mental, emotional and physical experiences. These energy fields are expressed in three ways:

•	Currents that are long and run north and south through the body,
•	Currents that run east and west through the body, and
•	Currents that start at the belly button and spiral outward through the body.

While science shows that the world is full of energy fields and currents, there is nothing to scientifically back-up the belief that the human body has an energy field that can be manipulated and adjusted. Evidence from studies is anecdotal at best in most cases, and nothing has been conclusive.

Still, polarity therapists hold that the body has a natural means of maintaining its own health and keeping the body’s energy field free of blockages or fixation will allow the body to function at optimal capacity.

If you’re interested in the alternative medicine of polarity therapy, then make sure that the polarity practitioner you see is at least registered with the American Polarity Therapy Association so that you know they are fully versed in the belief system and practices.

Kampo is the Japanese form of Traditional Chinese Medicine, or, rather, the study and adaptation of the same. Japan was exposed to Traditional Chinese Medicine between the 1600 and 1800s, adhering to some practices like acupuncture and moxibustion, but adapting most of the practices to the Japanese culture.

The main focus of Kampo is the use of herbs as a means of treating and curing ailments, pain and disease. As a basis of comparison, the use of herbs in the United States are seen as dietary supplements – almost like another form of food. Under the alternative medical practice of Kampo, however, the Japanese view herbs in the same since that Americans view pharmaceuticals – as a means of treating and curing disease.

In fact, herbal remedies are regulated throughout the nation. While there are several manufacturers of Kampo medicines throughout the nation, each of them produce the exact same combination of herbs for each medicine, adhering to strict regulations set forth by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

Additionally, the national health plan in Japan provides every citizen with access to herbal medicines under the Kampo practice, with currently near 150 Kampo medicines approved by the Ministry of Health for reimbursement. A nationwide survey conducted in 2000 showed that 72 percent of registered Japanese physicians prescribed Kampo medications to their patients.

Among some of the herbal remedies used is the Agaricus blazei mushroom, predominate among cancer patients, which is also the most popular per a 2001 report stating that nearly 500,000 people were or had used the medicine.

The practices of Kampo are fairly unknown to the western world, since they have only come to light in recent years. Those who do practice Kampo in the United States are likely to be acupuncturists, practitioners of Chinese medicine and others utilizing alternative medicines. Currently, Honso USA, Inc. is the only U.S. manufacturer of Kampo herbal medications.

Have you ever had the hiccups and received unsolicited wives’ tale remedies from everyone around you on how to get rid of them? Something to the effect of “stand on your head for 30 seconds or drink a glass of water while holding your breath and plugging your nose are some of the many shout-outs heard between your body’s painful and obnoxious gulps of air.

Home remedies, more commonly called wives’ tales, have been used as an alternative to medicine for minor ailments for decades. What works for one person, may not work for another, so the remedies often change with time and among family traditions.

Consider these possible alternative solutions the next time you have a little problem:

Put lemon juice, lime juice or sour milk on a wart to get rid of it.
Make a paste of baking soda and water to take the pain out of stings and the itch out of bites.
Eat peanut butter to cure a headache.
Gargle warm salt water to relieve the pain of a sore throat.
Round the corners of your toenails when you cut them to prevent ingrown toenails.
To completely remove a tick, cover it in petroleum jelly to suffocate it and then pull it out.

What about all the things you were told not to do as a child because it might have ill effects on your body. Some of them might be true and some might simply be a means of making you listen. Consider the following:

Don’t slouch in the chair or you’ll be come a hunchback.
Reading in low light can ruin your eyes.
Sucking your thumb can give you buck teeth.
If you swallow a piece of gum, it takes seven years to digest it.

While none of these wives’ tales are necessarily right or wrong, you should be careful what you put on your body and what you consume as an alternative cure to an ailment. If in doubt, it’s better to consult your doctor or, in the case of hiccups, wait it out.

Fight the common cold and flu year round, drawing on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to stay healthy in every season. Besides preventing exposure to pathogens by frequent hand washing and avoiding infected persons, upping our immunity helps fight off cough and cold.

In order for the body to defend itself against disease, it needs adequate rest. Sleeping is the only time the body can truly repair itself; in the context of TCM, our Qi, or energy flow, and blood are restored only during rest. Diminished qi compromises the body’s ability to fight off disease.

Another way to keep our body’s qi at a strong and healthy level is to minimize stress. Illness moves in when we let ourselves get run down, particularly in winter months. Winding down in autumn and winter is part of the natural cycle to rest and restore. Avoid physical stress by staying warm, covering the neck, keeping out of the wind, eating comforting and hearty meals, and getting extra sleep to help restore the body’s defenses. Living in accordance with the natural rhythm of the seasons will give the immune system the boost it needs to ward off cold and flu.

Nutrition also plays a big role in maintaining a healthy immune system. Eating a diet based on whole foods—unprocessed fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—keeps the body strong. Cooking with herbs and spices like fennel, anise, onion, turmeric, cumin, clove, coriander, basil, cinnamon and garlic aids digestion and strengthens qi. Drinking plenty of water and other fluids like warm ginger tea also helps balance the immune system, particularly when the body is coming down with something.

Herbal therapies are an important part of TCM, and can aid in warding off illness. Astragalus, an immune-boosting herb, may be used in combination with zinc and vitamin C; many others may be prescribed by a TCM practitioner, who will evaluate each individual’s circumstances.

Finally, acupuncture has been known to boost immunity and ease flu symptoms. Because Chinese medicine takes a holistic approach, a combination of treatments tailored to each person may be used to treat colds and flu.

TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) is often an alternative source of health medicine all over the world, dominating the Asian market to begin with. In fact, it is considered as the mainstream method of treatment all over in East Asia. The West is yet to accept it as a major force in the medical world as the majority of the Western society depends largely on allopathic remedies.

TCM is not a single dimensional way of treating people as it consists of various forms of treatments such as acupuncture, massage, herbs and dietary therapies. TCM’s roots are supposedly quite deep in to the history of ancient China. Arguably it is the kind of treatment that has been going on in China and East Asia for thousands of years. TCM is based on the clinical observation of Nature and how it interacts with the human body, and vice versa. It studies the cosmos as well to get deep in to the remedial system of human body system. TCM has got its practice majorly through family tradition as it has moved from one generation to the other to establish its dominance.

China is one of those countries who prefer to update themselves with modern technologies and advancements without refusing the history, culture and tradition. As a part of that, TCM has also been modernized in its application. Now the major ingredients of TCM, such as herbs and plants, are transformed in to tablets and soluble granules. China has its medication source from living creatures as well. The living creatures used for preparing TCM, which are about 25 in number, include frogs, earthworms, bees and snakes. Their key ingredients are now packed in sachets as pills. Another example of its modernization is that Artemisinin, an extensively used western drug to treat malaria, has got its inspiration from the major ingredients of TCM.

Chinese traditional medicine includes a variety of treatment methods such as acupuncture, dietary therapy and herbal medicine that are used for treating health problems. It includes massage techniques such as Tui Na and Shiatsu through which various ailments can be brought to normal levels.

The philosophy behind Chinese Medicine is that the human body is made up of a set of systems that are interconnected with one another. Chinese medical practitioners akin the human body to the universe and state that it is ruled by yin and yang energies. Their view of disease or illness is that it arises out of the malfunctioning of interconnected body systems or simply put – an imbalance in yin and yang forces. It is only when there is harmony between these two life forces that a person’s qi or vitality is maintained and they enjoy good health. There are five critical elements in the human body and Chinese medicine aims to balance these elements to heal the body of its various illnesses.

Chinese health medicine is useful for treating a variety of health problems. Here is a look at the conditions that it can treat:

Respiratory problems such as chronic cough, perennial rhinitis, asthma, bronchitis and sinusitis

Gastro-intestinal problems such as chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis

Rheumatological problems and urinary problems

Psychological problems such as depression, anxiety and so on

In the west, Chinese alternative medicine is viewed as alternative form of therapy, but in China it is used alongside modern medicine. Its popularity has risen over the years, owing to the fact that it does not cause any side effects since it does not make use of any harmful chemicals. Those who have undergone treatment feel re-energized and vitalized. It has shown positive results for problems such as asthma, bronchitis, arthritis, gastro-intestinal diseases and so on.

Many people are seen to opt for alternative medicines now-a-days because it does not give the kind of side effects experienced with chemical-based drugs. It includes a wide range of practices such as massage therapy, chiropractic, naturopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and naturopathy.

Alternative health medicine has been used to treat a variety of illnesses such as bad breath, insomnia, heart disease, allergies, depression, skin problem, gastrointestinal problems, arthritis and much more. Though in the west, alternate medicine is not used in general hospitals in China, Chinese Medicine in the form of herbal treatment methods or acupuncture is used alongside modern medicines.

Chinese Alternative Medicine is based on the philosophy of yin and yang energies, which must be in the right balance for the body to function normally. The oldest book on Chinese medicine Shen Nong’s Herbal Classic, extensively describes the use of various forms of herbs for treating various health complications. It indicates the use of 365 different species of roots, stones, woods, grass, fur and also animals for curing diseases.

A diagnosis of a problem is based on observation of symptoms rather than the use of laboratory tests. There are four types of observation methods used and these include general observance of sickness symptoms, finding out background of the patient, hearing the patient and also smelling their body odor and finally touching them to understand their body strength and area of ailment.

Chinese alternate treatment methods are extensive. It encompasses auriculotherapy, acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion, Qigong, Tui na and much more. The form of treatment chosen depends on the illnesses and careful observation of what is necessary to cure the problem. It takes a good Chinese alternate medical practitioner a lot of years to understand various health problems and treatment methods and become fully accomplished in handling the treatment process. Today, it is favored by many because they find that it provides effective treatment, without causing undue side effects.

There are so many forms of treatment available today, that at times, one feels lost on what really works. Where modern medicine fails to show positive results and cure, alternate therapy is viewed as the best option. One alternative therapy form that is widely popular now-a-days is Chinese medicine. Chinese health medicine is quite popular all over the world.

Chinese alternative medicine is based on some ancient healing practices that focus on curing illness by restoring the body’s normal energy flow or chi. This allows the body to heal itself in time. A well-known Chinese treatment form is Acupuncture. According to the Chinese treatment philosophy, the body is made up of channels of energy, called meridians. These channels flow through the body and enable the body to perform its various functions. Illnesses are caused when there is an obstruction in them as this causes energy deficiencies, and problem with blood flow and nervous pulses.

In Acupuncture, needles are inserted at certain precise points of the body. These points are located near the skin surface and when acupuncture needles pierce through them, they penetrate skin layer to touch energy channels and this process alters the biochemical and physiological conditions that enable to achieve required effect in healing the body. Heat is also applied alongside for the purpose of healing.

Acupuncture can cure problems such as back pain, arthritis, infertility and P.M.S.

As part of the acupuncture process, the needles stimulate various types of sensory receptors that send impulses to the brain’s hypothalamic-pituitary system which is responsible for sending neurotransmitters and endorphins. Endorphins play a critical role in functioning of the body’s hormonal system. The kinds of substances that are released by using acupuncture enable the whole body to relax and this is one of the main reasons why it is used for treating depression.

TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), which is often an alternative foundation of health medicine all over the world, dominates the East Asian market.

The history behind the development of TCM goes back to Buddhist and Taoist philosophies which proclaim a unique thought that human beings possesses a close bonding with mother Nature. Every activity of human beings is directly or indirectly connected with the environment they are surrounded with.

Chinese legends say that Yellow Emperor composed a book named Neijing: Suwen which deals with the basic questions about the “Inner Cannon”. He composed the same after having a conversation with Qibo, his minister. This book is supposed to be the foundation of TCM. However, modern scholars have their disagreements regarding this. According to them, this book was brought together only about 2,000 years or so, which means it was not done before Han Dynasty.

There were significant developments in TCM all through Middle Ages. The noteworthy emperor of Tang Dynasty, Emperor Gaozong, was responsible for the commissioning of one materia medica, which was a compiled academic research. It took note of 833 substances worth medicinal worth. These substances were in use taking from stones, cereal crops, minerals, metals, herbs, animals, plants, fruits and vegetables. These ingredients were categorically recorded in accordance with their pharmaceutical employments.

TCM is viewed in recent history as a major part of evolution in modern medical science. There was a time when evil spirits were accused of being responsible for all the diseases but TCM can be regarded as the first of the lot to give it a scientific thought while curing a disease. This medical method is entirely based on observation and practical implementations of available resources. The Western civilization has identified TCM long back even in the 18th century when acupuncture was not an uncommon way of treating illnesses.

Chinese Alternative Medicine seeks to treat illnesses through a combination of various techniques that cure diseases by unblocking the energy flow in the body. One of the most well-known Chinese treatment methods is acupuncture.

According to the acupuncture theory, the body’s vital energy is Qi and it circulates throughout various body parts through energy channels called meridians. This flow of energy is similar to the way the body’s circulatory system works. If there is any interruption on the flow of Chi, the body succumbs to illness.

This form of medical treatment began around 2500 BC and is highly effective in treating various diseases that cannot be cured by western medicine. There are many acupuncture styles and techniques and these include Japanese style acupuncture, Korean Hand Acupuncture, Auricular Acupuncture, and Classical Chinese Acupuncture. The most commonly practiced form in the United States is the Classical Chinese Acupuncture.

The process of healing is done at three levels – mind, body and spirit. In curing the problem, it seeks to not just completely remove the symptoms of the problem but also the cause. Traditional acupuncture can treat chronic problems such as arthritis, migraines, and also other problems such as PMS, depression, chronic fatigue, headaches, migraines, chronic back pain, withdrawal symptoms of drugs and alcohol, infertility and so on.

During an acupuncture session, needles are inserted in various points of the body for the purpose of releasing blocked energy. However, it is not just the inserting of needles that is the critical factor here. In addition to the use of needles, a wide array of herbs is used with the needles or on their own. Pressure points are massages to help relieve muscle tension and bring abut relaxation. Lifestyle changes are also prescribed to reinforce treatment effects.

Acupuncture is a very effective alternate medicine or health medicine. In order to gain the best benefits from acupuncture treatment, it is necessary to have it done by an expert. Depending on individual health and the illness, it can take just a couple of sessions or maybe many sessions to ensure that the problem does not continue.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is sought after for curing health problems, because it is highly effective and can bring about definite positive results. The reason behind its effectiveness is that it likens the human body to the universe and all systems inside the body to be interlinked to one another, just like elements of the universe.

The entire body has a crisscross of meridians flowing through it through which the body’s energy, referred to as Chi in Chinese Traditional Medicine flows. When the energy is blocked, illness occurs. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) looks into releasing this blocked energy for making the body to function properly.

TCM practices include herbal medicine, qugong exercises, and acupuncture. Major theories that govern treatment are five Phases, Meridian System, Zang Fu, Six confirmations and four levels. The most important of these theories is the five elements theory. The five elements on which TCM is based are Water (kidney, ears), Wood (liver, eyes), Fire (heart, sexual glands, and tongue), Earth (spleen, mouth) and Metal (lungs, nose). This five elements theory has been use for more than 2000 years for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment of various illnesses.

Unlike modern medical practices, TCM does not make use of lab tests to check for the health problem. It makes use of methods such as observation, using hearing and smell, and touching to find out the exact cause of the problem and a means for curing it.

TCM can cure problems such as anxiety, spinal stnosis, high blood pressure, allergies, arthritis, insomnia, bipolar disorder, psoriasis, and even spinal cord injury. In order to get the best results from treatment it is necessary to consult an experienced practitioner. This way the health problem is addressed at the root level so that the actual cause of the problem is analyzed and the problem rectified to bring about normal health once again.

Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM comes with a history of over 3000 years. It tries to diagnose the human ailments with a Taoistic understanding of the universe and the nature of alternative Health Medicine. Its unique method of diagnosis and treatment is very different from Western medicine. Its foundation of treatment is based on diagnosing and differentiating syndromes. The body of literature encompasses a vast array of folk medical practices based on mysticism.

It believes that the body’s vital energy, chi, circulates through networks called meridians. The energy running through these pathways reaches each and every organ in the body and determines healthy functioning of each organ. When chi is interrupted or is not in balance, the body falls sick. It treats the zangfu organs, which is believed to be the core of the human body. and the Chi, which is believed to be the carrier of information and any imbalance is manifested through the jingluo system.

Traditional Chinese medicine treats and diagnoses an ill or diseased human body on the basis of the yin-yang theory as weel as the idea of the five elements. These theories are based on the belief that there is a connection between the laws of nature and the physiological and physiological changes in human body. It studies the phenomena of nature’s laws and its effect and relationship with the human body.

Chinese medicine is also referred to as Oriental Medicine, and involves ancient practices like acupuncture, Qigong exercises and use of various herbs to heal and restore balance in the human body. Though these therapies appear to be very different form each other, they all share the common belief and assumptions of the nature of human body and its relationship with the universe.

Acupuncture treats the body by stimulating certain external body parts while qigong exercises regulate and maintain smooth flow of Chi or energy through the channels or meridians in the body. The herbal medicines, on the other hand, keep the internal organs of the human body in a good functioning order. Many scientists describe the different methods of treatments in Chinese Medicine as Information Therapy.

Overcoming addictions can be one of the most difficult things a person can do. Many people have spent a part of their life fighting addictions. One of the most difficult and deadly addictions is cigarette addiction. Nicotine is the primary cause of cigarette addiction – not the cigarettes themselves. Although nicotine is the agent that makes cigarettes addictive, it is the smoke and carcinogens that make smoking so deadly. Not only are cigarettes adverse to the health of smokers, cigarettes can also harm the non-smokers around them due to second-hand smoke.

Many have tried various gimmicks and programs to help defeat a smoking addiction. Anything from drinking grapefruit juice or green tea to taking a bath are common suggestions to help overcome cigarette addiction.

A large industry surrounding addiction treatments continues to develop. Many drugs, devices and programs have been developed to ease the process of quitting smoking. The TV and radio are filled with advertisements selling the latest and greatest method or device to help overcome addictions. Some are more promising than others. E cigarettes are a device that shows some promise.

As opposed to the patch or gum, where small doses of nicotine are either absorbed through the skin or ingested, E cigarettes deliver nicotine almost exactly like a real cigarette – through inhaling. E cigarettes are what their name implies: Electronic cigarettes. They are composed of a tube with an element that vaporizes a nicotine solution as the user inhales through the tube. They are often manufactured to resemble actual cigarettes and the process of “smoking” one closely resembles the act of smoking a real cigarette.

This replication of smoking while eliminating the deadly smoke both inhaled and exhaled make the e cigarette a great option for those wanting to try another method to quit smoking.
