The Alternative Medicine Sourcebook describes “alternative medicine” as healing practices that do “not fall within the realm of conventional medicine.” Critics claim that the effectiveness of alternative medicine is negligible, but many turn to it as a practical treatment for their ailments, often in conjunction with conventional medicine. Business is good, and practitioners are in demand. Here are a few fields that those interested in alternative medicine careers can pursue.

  • Acupuncture: Acupuncture treats patients via the insertion or manipulation of needles in the body. The ancient practice originated in China and is used to relieve pain, promote health, and some claim that it can prevent disease and improve fertility.
  • Chiropractics: This field of alternative medicine focuses on diagnosing and treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Treatments involve manual therapy of joints or of the spine and certain exercises.
  • Iridology: This somewhat controversial alternative medicine involves diagnosing physical ailments by thoroughly examining the eye. Treatments then generally include homeopathy or herbal medication.
  • Naturopathy: Naturopathy involves encouraging the body’s natural ability to heal and not relying on surgery or medication. Treatments include, but are not limited to, acupuncture, massage, kinesiology, iridology, enemas, vitamins, and a variety of other therapies.

Those interested in careers in medicine alternatives generally need some sort of specific education or training. This can be gained from classes, study, apprenticing or through specialized institutions like chiropractic schools. A lot of people are either wary of chemicals or in favor of more natural treatments and will need professionals in the field of alternative medicine to help them.

One of the biggest mistakes that you can make pertaining to herbs and herbal remedies is taking dieter’s teas and herbal laxatives thinking that it is going to induce regularity in your bowel movements. The herbs that are found in products such as these are known as anthranoid laxatives, and they include buckthorn, senna, aloe, rhubarb and cascara sagrada.

People that use these products can actually become unnecessarily dependent, and may end up using them for days, weeks, months or years longer than they are supposed to. Stimulant laxative chemicals like senna should never be used for a period longer than a week, unless you have express permission from your physician or some other licensed health care provider. When you use products such as these for an extended period of time, then it may cause your bowels to have difficulty moving all on their own. People who have taken these laxatives for too long a period of time have ended up with chronic diarrhea issues along with irregular heart rhythms, muscle weakness, liver impairment and kidney impairment.

Make sure that you talk with your primary health care provider about being able to wean off of laxatives in a gradual manner so that you can recover your normal bowel function again. The big key here is going to be to go about the process slowly, typically combined with taking a fiber supplement and making sure that you also get enough fluids as well.

Using Essential Oils Daily

Essential oils and aromatherapy have been proven in some studies to benefit the body and overall health in different ways. There are hundreds of different essential oils that are said to be capable of enhancing health, but that does not mean that every one of them has been studied in depth to explore the beneficial effects. The current research regarding aromatherapy is somewhat limited, but some essential oils have so far proven themselves capable of helping in the treatment of specific conditions.

Lemon, for example, is said to be capable of improving your mood when you breathe in its scent. This is according to a study from 2008 that tested 56 volunteers. Studies have also showed, however, that lemon oil does not lower blood pressure, ease pain or lessen stress. A study in 2009 indicated that animals inhaling linalool from lemon essential oil decreased their stress-elevated immune cell levels.

Another essential oil that has proven itself capable of working is lavender. People say that lavender has a sedative effect, and so it has proven itself capable of relieving anxiety and lessening insomnia in several different studies. One study was published in 2007 that showed lavender to be capable of alleviating agitated behaviors in older adults suffering from dementia.

Tea tree oil has been used for a very long time in folk medicine for the purpose of treating burns, cuts, infections and a number of other skin conditions. It may also be capable of killing Staphylococcus aureus, the bacteria that is responsible for causing staph infections, at least according to a report from 2009.  Other studies have showed that tea tree oil can be effective in treating a number of other conditions including dandruff, athlete’s foot and warts.

Another worthwhile essential oil is rosemary. If you sniff rosemary for five minutes you can experience a decrease in a stress hormone known as cortisol, according to a study that was conducted in 2007.

Chinese Herbs – Yohimbe

Yohimbe is a substance that can be found inside the bark of evergreen trees that are located in Western Africa. The specific species of evergreen tree in which this herb originates is called pausinystalia yohimbe, and is nearly extinct due to pharmaceutical companies over harvesting their natural habitat for the erectile dysfunction remedy the herb provides. The yohimbe provides many additional attributes that have yet to be researched effectively enough, however.

For hundreds of years, the yohimbe bark has been used to battle fevers and disease in Cameroon. Addtionally, it was used often in tea form for various marriage and mating celebrations, as well as ingested by warriors prior to a nearing battle for an energy boost.

The small amount of yohimbe that has been restricted by cultivation in West Africa has allowed research to be conducted on this mysterious herb. Thus far, findings present themselves as proving the yohimbe herb can: improve overall sexual function, particularly in men, reduce and even prevent heart attacks, assist in the reduction of anxiety and improve muscle function while simultaneously building muscle mass. The enhancements this herb provides are extremely promising and scientists are optimistic that further research will bring to light a barrage of additional benefits.

Unfortunately, with the over emphasis on this herb as a modern cure for impotence, pharmaceutical companies might bring the yohimbe tree to extinction before research can reveal all of the health benefits of the yohimbe herb. The latest research of this mysterious herb has placed an emphasis on the prospective heart health attributes it presents. However, one finding has implied that yohimbe vastly increases blood flow to the extremities which can be a flawless way to improve brain function, heart function and help prevent heart disease; but this effect ironically, can be dangerous for people with pre-existing heart conditions due to the sudden changes in blood pressure.

Energy Healing

Energy healing is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Chinese and others who practice traditional medicine believe that energy healing removes blockages from the energy paths in the body. These energy pathways are known as meridians. Energy healing is used upon the energy centers of the body called Chakras. Areas of the body that correspond with Chakra energy centers include the top of the head, between the eyebrows, the throat and solar plexus, stomach area, heart, and base of the spine. Each of these areas are identified by a specific color.

The Chakra located at the top of the head corresponds with the color purple and is associated with spirituality. Indigo is the color assigned to the Chakra between the eyes. Psychic abilities are associated with this Chakra. The blue Chakra of the throat is associated with communication. The solar plexus Chakra is the center of our emotions and is yellow in color. The Chakra of the stomach area is represented by the color orange and is the center of creativity. The green Chakra area of the heart controls the immune system. The red Chakra at the base of the spine represents security.

The human body is its own energy field. The energy field of the body reacts to the sources of energy surrounding it. In the practice of energy healing, the human hand is the tool used during the healing process. The healers hands will travel the meridian pathways and identify blocked area. The energy force from the hands of the healer will clear the blocked areas and restore balance in the patient.

Energy healing is a good method for healing pain. This type of Chinese medicine is especially effective on pain in the areas of the back and neck. The healing properties also benefit ailments of the internal organs. Phsycological and spiratual issues are also areas that are well addressed by energy healing. When concerned about illness or seeking balance choose energy healing.
