To many people the idea of exercise is a four letter word. It’s not something that they look forward to but they agree to it anyway. But then something happens not long after they decide that they are going to get on the exercise band wagon…they fall off the exercise bandwagon.

While it’s understandable why someone who starts on a program will get discouraged and stop, it’s also completely avoidable. There are ways for people to enjoy exercise without it being a chore. Here are a few examples of how to ramp up your workout without wanting to throw in the towel.

The first thing you can do is take the workout outside of the gym. There are plenty of people who feel like it’s a chore just sitting on a treadmill…so don’t. Just get off the treadmill and take it outdoors. Just doing a leisurely hike might be a great way to get the blood flowing and get the exercise you need.

Something else to consider is that just doing the same thing over and over has to be boring, so make sure that your exercise is something that you enjoy. Don’t be the kind of person who does squats just because you are told to do it. You’ll get discouraged and quit. The best thing that you can do is focus on doing the kinds of exercises that you like and forgetting about exercises that you don’t particularly like.

You can be in great shape by having fun with exercise. Remember to make it about enjoyment and everything else will fall into place.

Sometimes a drug is just a drug. Amoxicillin, for instance, has aided people in fighting infection for years, but it’s effects don’t normally translate beyond the individual and the infection itself. However, there are some drugs, like Cialis, that have a long lasting effect on the patient and have had an effect on society as a whole.

For years men have had problems in the bedroom. Whether it be health related, or stress related, there are plenty of people who have found it hard to perform and it has impacted them physically as well as emotionally. While there is no reason to be ashamed of these problems there has long been a stigma that has left men feeling embarrassed. Cialis has done so much to change the perception of men who have erectile dysfunction.

Cialis was a breakthrough medically before it was anything else. The drug, by increasing blood flow to the penis, has allowed for men to achieve erection and maintain it throughout sexual activity. With many insurance companies paying for it there is a growing number of men who are having the kind of sex life they deserve and are no longer having to deal with the shame of having ED.

But Cialis has been far more revolutionary than just helping in the bedroom. Cialis has done it’s job to erase the social stigma that comes with having ED. Where men were embarrassed to admit their lack of performance in the bedroom they are now able to proudly admit that they are not alone. There are now millions of men who share the same struggles and take the same drug. This makes it feel like it’s not about their manhood but rather about science and health. There is an overwhelming sense of relief these men feel that they can buy Cialis online, admit they have a problem and get the help that they need.

According to the American Art Therapy Association “art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals …” Art therapists are credentialed professionals who are referred by your doctor. Art therapy is a recognized effective treatment for ADHD, Depression, and bipolar disorder.

ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder effects between 4% to 8% of children in the United States and this condition continues into adult hood. The inability to maintain concentration and focus makes learning difficult. Medication is the usual route, but sometimes is ineffective, or the side effects are not desired. Dr. Barroqueiro D. Ed. D. who has the condition herself wrote a paper emphasizing the positive aspects of ADHD which involves creativity. Persons able to create and control their environment go on to have very productive lives. One way to facilitate this is using art therapy since it slows down the brain and trains it to concentrate. This allows a person to stabilize and manage their moods.

Depression

Many ailments such as cancer, HIV, and dementia involve treating depression along with the illness. The University of Leipzig Department of Medical Psychology and Medical Sociology did a study where they gathered all the research papers done on cancer and art therapy from 1987 to 2009. There were 56 papers. In general, from those studies there was found a correlation where art therapy made significant decreases in a patient’s anxiety and depression.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that causes a persons moods or emotions to shift without external cause. Again research showed art provided a natural way to calm and stabilize patients mood. It removed some of the internal triggers such as faulty thinking or perfectionism that tends to destabilize those with the disorder.

If you or someone you love has a disorder of this nature along with the medication you might consider exploring these alternative treatments.

Energy healing is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Chinese and others who practice traditional medicine believe that energy healing removes blockages from the energy paths in the body. These energy pathways are known as meridians. Energy healing is used upon the energy centers of the body called Chakras. Areas of the body that correspond with Chakra energy centers include the top of the head, between the eyebrows, the throat and solar plexus, stomach area, heart, and base of the spine. Each of these areas are identified by a specific color.

The Chakra located at the top of the head corresponds with the color purple and is associated with spirituality. Indigo is the color assigned to the Chakra between the eyes. Psychic abilities are associated with this Chakra. The blue Chakra of the throat is associated with communication. The solar plexus Chakra is the center of our emotions and is yellow in color. The Chakra of the stomach area is represented by the color orange and is the center of creativity. The green Chakra area of the heart controls the immune system. The red Chakra at the base of the spine represents security.

The human body is its own energy field. The energy field of the body reacts to the sources of energy surrounding it. In the practice of energy healing, the human hand is the tool used during the healing process. The healers hands will travel the meridian pathways and identify blocked area. The energy force from the hands of the healer will clear the blocked areas and restore balance in the patient.

Energy healing is a good method for healing pain. This type of Chinese medicine is especially effective on pain in the areas of the back and neck. The healing properties also benefit ailments of the internal organs. Phsycological and spiratual issues are also areas that are well addressed by energy healing. When concerned about illness or seeking balance choose energy healing.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, good health is associated with the balance of yin and yang within the body system. Yin is identified with the life force of blood and yang is associated with energy. Disease is believed to be caused by the energy within these systems being blocked or out of balance. The practice of acupuncture uses needles inserted in specific areas of the body. Acupuncture is used to treat illness and provide therapy. Many practitioners support the use of acupuncture for treatment of disease, pain and infertility. The practice of acupuncture is considered an alternative type of medicine.

Acupuncture is based on the belief that blocked or insufficient energy can be unblocked and provided by the placement and manipulation of needles along the meridian path of the body. The energy path of the meridian locations are believed to be the points that are areas for healing using acupuncture. The points chosen along the meridian path are based on mystical Chinese beliefs. The main acupuncture points used are the twelve main meridian pathways and two of the eight extra meridian paths.

A visit to an acupuncturist will include an examination and discussion with the practitioner. Based on the results of the examination the acupuncturist will decide which pressure points to treat. Modern acupuncturists will utilize fine diameter stainless steel needles for the treatment. The depth of insertion will be dependent upon the style of treatment used. Warming an acupuncture point with herbs prior to insertion into a pressure point may be used as a supplement to the treatment. A large majority of areas require acupuncture needles to be sterile, disposable to be used only once and then discarded.

A majority of people beleive that accupuncture is an effective form of treatment and would visit an accupuncturist. A large number of insurance plans cover the cost of acupuncture treatments making it an available option for many.

Magnetic therapy is a form of alternative medicine that is used to reduce inflammation and heal injured bones and soft tissue. It is also used to treat pain. Magnetic therapy is considered safe to use for most individuals. Patients that should be cautious with using this type of therapy include pregnant women and individuals who have an implanted electrical devise within their body. The types of magnets used in this type of therapy may be applied directly to specific points of the body or be a part of a bandage type apparatus that is worn by the patient. Some individuals wear a magnetic bracelet as a form of therapy.

The human blood protein that carries oxygen within the body has been reported to be impacted by the use of magnets dependent upon the strength of the magnet used. Studies have reported some positive effect from the use of magnets. There has been no meaningful evidence that proves that magnets possess the healing powers they are presented to have. Even without the proof that justifies the use of magnets they remain highly popular. Purchase of bracelets, earring’s, necklaces, magnetically supplemented mattress pads, and magnetic shoe insoles continue to increase.

With the hope of a cure and the testimony of many magnetic therapy will remain a consideration of an alternative form of health care. Sufferers of pain related to injury and diabetes continue to seek out a cure for their condition and magnetic therapy is often considered and used. Some report a positive effect and others show no signs of improvement.

Research and studies into the effectiveness of magnetic therapy have been inconclusive. In the United States there are regulations that prohibit using medical claims to market magnetic devices. Sales of magnetic therapy devices have exceeded one billion dollars which makes it a very profitable business.

A Yoga approach to diet teaches about the interaction of three qualities called gunas. These qualities are tamas (stasis), sattva (harmony and balance), and rajas (energy). The gunas are represented in everything, including food. Rajas is represented as hot and energetic. Sattva is pure and wholesome. Tamas is cool and sustained. A yoga diet is designed to balance the gunas in the foods that we eat. All three gunas are present in each food type with one of the gunas predominant. An Ayurvedic practitioner will be able to help identify the type of diet that is necessary for a particular personality. Energetic individuals may require sattva and tamasic food in order to achieve balance.

Sattvic foods include grains, fruit, vegetables, cheese, nuts, seeds, honey, herbs and water. Sattvic food promotes balance of the body and mind and produces a positive flow of energy between the two.

Rajasic foods are salty, dry, sour or bitter. These foods include chocolate, eggs, chili peppers, coffee and strong spices. Energetic individuals who eat rajasic foods may become restless. These foods can restore energy in those who are lethargic.

Tamasic foods are often considered products to be avoided. These foods are acidic and dry. Types of tamasic foods include meat, onions, garlic and mushrooms. Alcohol is also considered a tamasic food.

In addition to developing a diet that compliments your personality, there are guidelines that should be considered. Foods that are fresh and in their natural state should be selected. Foods that are treated in order to be preserved longer should be avoided. Processed and fast foods should be eliminated when on a Yoga diet. Foods with additives including coloring should also be removed from the Yoga diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a mainstay of the diet. Following a yoga diet and incorporating the practice of yoga will provide balance to those who practice it.

Acne is widely considered a scourge of the teen years, but some people suffer from it all their lives. Nearly 80% of teenagers have acne in some form or severity, while older acne victims face periodic outbreaks. It is well known that acne is a skin condition characterized by the abnormal functioning of oil glands in the skin. Sebum is prevented from travelling up the hair follicle, and accumulates to form a breeding ground for bacteria. Causes range from heredity to environmental conditions to medications and food habits.

Modern medicine has a variety of treatments for acne, including topical ointments, antibiotics, accutane, corticosteroids, and dermabrasion. Some of these treatments can have severe side effects, and even create new problems of their own. Antibiotics can hinder the effect of other medications, and cause digestive disorders. Accutane is a very controversial mode of treatment, especially for women, since it contributes quite significantly to fetal malformations. Corticosteroids can suppress the immune system and trigger a number of allergies in the user.

Quite understandably, many acne sufferers look for alternative options and health medicines or systems to cure their condition. Traditional Chinese medicine has emerged as a popular choice of treatment for acne. As with all other ailments, Chinese medicine views acne as the result of an internal imbalance. Acne is seen as the outcome of excess heat and toxins in the body, and Chinese therapy tries to cure it by reducing the heat and eliminating toxins.

Treatment is characterized by the search for an underlying factor, as Chinese medicine aims to control the root cause and not the external outcome. Practitioners prescribe herbal medicines in custom doses via pills, tinctures, herbal teas, and powders. This is often supplemented by a controlled diet that aims to eliminate excess heat from the body by cooling the blood. Foods like watermelon, cherries, lettuce, squash, and cabbage are a good supplement to acne medication. When taken in correct doses under supervision, Chinese medicines have virtually no side effects.

Chinese medicine is a good option for anybody seeking a lasting cure from acne, since it promotes a healthy change in lifestyle and food habits.

Fasting is an effective way to cleanse and purify the body. This process also helps to center the mind and body. Fasting provides the opportunity for the digestive system to rest which will provide energy to the body that would normally be used to absorb and process food. Individuals who practice fasting report that the process clears the mind and provides a centered feeling that allows free concentration and meditation. A significant amount of self control is required of those who choose to fast. The act of fasting should only be used to cleanse the body. The results will include a restoration of balance within the individual.

A fast normally lasts between one and three days. The one day fast may provide rest for the digestive system but will not provide a total detoxification. Prior to beginning a fast the body should be prepared by simplifying the diet. Normal meals should be replaced with a lite diet. On fasting days solid food should be eliminated and replaced with a liquid diet of either fruit or vegetable juice. These two food group types should not be mixed. Water should included in the liquid fast along with the juices. A water only fast is possible but should be preceded by consulting a practitioner for advice.

Strenuous activity should be avoided during a fast due to the lack of energy that may be experienced. Your body will spend this time releasing toxins that will be eliminated in many ways. Skin should be kept clean and free of products that may normally be used. These products block the pores of the skin which may prohibit detoxification.

Breaking a fast should be a gradual process that include introducing small amounts of non acidic foods into your diet. Continue to add food items until you are at the point of eating normally.

If you’re like millions of Americans fighting the battle of the bulge with little success despite your attempts to eat less and exercise, herbal remedies might be a fantastic option to look into.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The old mantra stands the test of time, even when it comes to losing weight. There are many pharmaceutical drugs out there that advertise promising weight loss, but they are expensive and often don’t deliver what you are promised.

What follows are some herbal ingredients that may be helpful in your personal battle to lose weight.

•	Green tea: Green tea often mimics the effect of coffee but it is much better for you. With a high-dose of vitamin C, green tea is simply good for you. Studies suggest green tea is effective in boosting one’s metabolism and helping the body to burn fat. Some studies show the combination of caffeine and green tea to be especially effective.

•	Cayenne: You know the super-spicy spice, cayenne pepper? Cayenne contains an ingredient called capsaicin which essentially stimulates saliva production and therefore helps the body digest faster, acting as a boost to your regular metabolic rate.

•	Seaweed: While it doesn’t sound too appetizing, seaweed can have a positive effect in helping people lose weight. The herbal form of this oceanic delicacy acts to stimulate the thyroid. No worries with trying to digest the ocean’s form of seaweed as the herb does come in forms of capsules of tablets.

•	Dandelion: Who knew the colorful flower that aggravates homeowners by the millions could help in terms of weight loss? Dandelion, in pill form, acts as a diuretic which helps naturally decrease the amount of water in the body. Some people have allergic reactions and heartburn as minor side effects to dandelion.

Listening to music is an integral part of many of our lives. It soothes our soul when the work day has been long. It gives us energy when our spirits or physical being is tired. It is tied to our most important rituals such as marriages and funerals. What most people do not realize though is music heals.

Music therapy is a legitimate medical treatment for a variety of ailments and has been around for nearly fifty years. It is administered by credentialed professionals, who have been referred by your doctor. It is well researched and recommended for stroke victims, epilepsy patients, and Alzheimer’s patients.

Stroke

A 2008 Finnish study published in the February 20th issue of the Brain involved 54 patients, who had various types of strokes. One group was given audio books to listen to for a few hours of the day, the control group received the standard treatments, and a third group listened to music for a set time. The group that listened to music had significant improvement in focusing attention and concentration.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which a person’s brain has an electrical storm. Dr. Sidorenko did a study, where they assessed the effectiveness of Medical Resonance Therapy Music done on severe epileptic patients in which medication was not being effective. He found that the frequency and severity of the attacks were reduced as much as 75 percent.

Alzeheimers

Alzeheimers is not only devastating to the person that has the disease, but also to the ones closest to them. The ailment breaks the relationship between partners as
the patient loses the ability to interact with their spouse and loved ones. At the University of Queensland a project by Dr. Felicity Baker sent music therapists to the home and trained the spouse how to use music and dance to facilitate conversation. This provided a means of interacting and maintaining relationships.

Music therapy does much to improve a patient’s quality of life.

Before you ban your child from playing video or computer games you might want to take a look at the latest research.

Obesity has been declared a major health issue in the United States. Obesity in children has risen dramatically in recent decades. In a study found in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine the issue of obesity is being treated with video games. For example, the video game”Escape from Diab” was designed and used to treat
children with type 2 diabetes. Management of diabetes takes major behavior changes which are always difficult. Children in the study played the game and learned what needed to be done to control their diabetes. The study showed that children increased their fruit and vegetable consumption by 2/3 servings daily in the period of time they were exposed to the game.

Dyslexia is a major obstacle to learning how to read efficiently. The American Psychological Association states that dyslexia can be undone. One way this is being done is through a video program called Fast Forword (http://www.scilearn.com/) This game was based on a 2003 study using MRIs by Elise Temple, PhD., John Gabrieli, PhD., Dr. Tallal and others. The game after several months of use changed the brain and lessened children’s dyslexia. This study found increased use of multiple brain regions during language processing, as well as significantly improved language and reading skills.

The Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology in its November/December issue highlighted a study by Christine Hanson and Synthia Puffenburger which tested a game that was designed to improve the working memory in children with ADHD. Working memory is important for academic success. One fourth to one third of the children showed significant progress in their working memory after using the program for a month and a half.

Recent research studies are proving daily that games can be a useful treatment for some of our most complex diseases and syndromes, particularly in children.

Some say yes, others say no. Whatever the response, people are citing a number of different reasons for their opinion.

Those who believe that an electronic cigarette is safer than a regular cigarette give several typical responses. One is that the device is safer because no tobacco product is being burned, thus no tars or chemicals are being taken into the body (as happens with regular cigarettes).

Others say that an electronic cigarette is safer because even if the contains some nicotine liquid, the amount taken in is nowhere near that of a regular cigarette. Less nicotine means less danger from nicotine intake; plus, taking in less nicotine can help them cut down or even stop smoking regular cigarettes.

The argument is also made that an electronic cigarette is safer because nothing is burning. There is no danger of burning oneself or someone else with the lit end, or of anything catching fire should one fall asleep while smoking an electronic cigarette. This can be especially true, they say, of those devices that have automatic shut-off features that operate when the device has not been puffed on for a while.

Those who take an opposing view say they believe an electronic cigarette is not safer because the filters and delivery methods in the devices can actually release harmful chemicals. They also say that if one smokes an electronic cigarette that contains liquid nicotine, the chemical is being absorbed in the body, and even a small amount is too much.

They also say that anyone who truly wants to quit smoking can take advantage of smoking cessation methods such as nicotine patches or even acupuncture, which is a part of traditional Chinese medicine practices. Any of these may help someone be able to stop smoking entirely, without having to rely on e-cigarettes.

“Show me your tongue” is a phrase anybody who has ever visited a physician would have heard. In traditional Chinese medicine however, your doctor would give more than just a passing glance to your tongue. To them, the tongue is seen as a vital indicator of your state of health.

Western science and most health medicines view the tongue primarily as an organ for taste, and occasionally check it to detect symptoms of an already suspected illness. In Chinese medicine, a tongue diagnosis may just end up being used as an alternative to the traditional ‘physical’. The tongue is believed to represent imbalances in the body, and the diagnosis is made by checking the color, coating, and edges of the tongue.

The color of the tongue is the first and most easily visible characteristic. Pink suggests normal health, while red and its deeper shades point to excess heat in the body. Purplish hues are indicative of stagnation, or circulatory issues. A pale tongue, on the other hand, shows that body is not warm enough.

The coating of the tongue is the next important feature. Dirty white to yellowish coatings are a symptom of excess heat in the body. It could be temporary due to an illness or even a hot meal. Extreme cases can point to individual organs that need to cool in order to restore balance in the body. The evenness and consistency of the coating also indicates the adequacy and functioning of digestive juices. Spots and cracks on the surface are other features that are considered for a diagnosis.

If your tongue is hammer-shaped or swollen, it is indicative of a more serious internal disorder. Tongues that are flaccid, with teeth marks along the side are said to show the lack of Chi energy in the body. This causes limpness, or excess dampness and edema.

The science behind a tongue diagnosis is far too extensive to be covered in a single article. But a good physician can unearth many significant findings about your body and its health by looking at the condition of your tongue.

Some would say yes, that you simply cannot have one without the other. These, however, may be the ones who are the most affected by cigarette smoking restrictions or even outright bans in workplaces and other public areas. For them, the decision may be between having coffee or a cigarette, as it may be very difficult for them to do both.

For these people, an electric cigarette may be the answer. An electric cigarette does not produce real tobacco smoke that contains the tars, nicotine, and other chemicals that are found in regular tobacco products, nor is there the lingering odor of cigarette smoke. Further, an electric cigarette does not produce any ash and the “smoke” that is produced is simply exhaled water vapor.

If smokers are in the workplace, they may ask their supervisor if smoking an e-cigarette in designated non-smoking areas is allowable. They can explain that the “smoke” is simply water vapor, perhaps scented with menthol or other flavorings.

They can also explain that the water vapor is not the same as “secondhand smoke” that is produced by a regular cigarette. There are no tars or other chemicals, and the nicotine liquid itself has been filtered through the water vapor.

If the e-cigarette smoker is told that it is all right to smoke an e-cigarette in designated non-smoking areas, and if co-workers do not object (some may be sensitive to even the “smoke” caused by the water vapor), then the pairing of coffee and a cigarette can occur again. If, however, the answer is no, or there is objection from co-workers, the e-cigarette user may have to make the decision of which one is more important—the cigarette or the coffee. Hopefully they all choose the coffee, as it is nowhere near as dangerous as a regular cigarette!

You’re drifting on a large cruise liner across the high seas, and the incessant rocking – rocking – rocking is making your stomach churn in ways you never though imaginable. Among the many recommendations to alleviate the nausea from fellow passengers, someone suggests you wear a magnetic bracelet directly on the veins of your wrist.

At this point you’re willing to try anything, but what do magnets have to do with your unruly stomach?

Also known as magnetic therapy or magnotherapy, magnet therapy is the exposure of the body to static magnetic fields to cure certain conditions, such as nausea.

The claim is that the magnetic field affects the hemoglobin (the oxygen carrying protein) in the blood, since hemoglobin is repelled by magnetic fields. However, experts find this to be highly unlikely, since most of the magnets uses in magnetic therapy are too weak to effect the hemoglobin in any way.

The claimed benefits of magnet therapy range from aiding in the healing process of wounds to simply increasing the wearer’s energy. There are a number of magnetic products available as well, including jewelry, shoe insoles, mattresses, blankets, body creams, vitamins or supplements and magnetized water.

The claimed effects that magnet therapy has on the body, such as increasing and correcting blood flow or effecting the blood’s hemoglobin, are not even observed in the modern medical use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is several times stronger than any of the magnets used in magnet therapy practices. Additionally, studies in both 2008 and 2009 showed that magnet therapy had no effect on the patients.

Still, the industry of magnet therapy products sees over a billion dollars in global sales each year, according to a 2007 report in the Skeptical Inquirer. There’s no use thinking Americans don’t believe in the practice, since $300 million of those annual sales come from the U.S.

However, there is no indication that magnet therapy is harmful in any way either. So, you might as well give that magnetic bracelet a shot and, who knows, maybe it will cure your sea sickness after all.

Fasting is not just something mentioned in the Bible. Many view this abstinence from food, drink or both as not only a spiritual means of meditation, but also as an effective alternative medicine – a means of cleansing the body and starting anew with healthier eating practices.

What someone who is fasting abstains from can vary. While one individual might fast from all food, another individual may just fast from meat for a determined amount of time. Someone who fasts may also exclude certain types of drinks with the exception of water, or may substitute all food with a protein drink. Additionally, the time frame of a fast differs with each individual.

Fasting is sometimes a requirement for certain medical tests performed in modern medicine, but this is actually different from the more spiritually centered approach. In modern medicine, fasting refers to someone who has not eaten overnight (usually a period of 8-12 hours) or the state of the body after a meal is completely absorbed and digested.

Fasting for an extended period of time triggers the body’s “famine response.” The body depends on glucose as the primary source of fuel or energy. After a period of 4-8 hours without food in the body producing glucose, the body starts to glycogen stored in the liver for fuel. After approximately 12 hours of relying upon the glycogen in the liver, the body will start extracting glycogen from muscles. In order to preserve the muscles, the body will turn to fat as a fuel source after a few more days.

While most people end a fast long before complications begins to occur, fasting for too long will cause the body to break down proteins as it moves from the famine response to starvation. Fast-induced starvation can lead to medical problems such as electrolyte imbalance, cardiac arrhythmia and renal failure.

Despite this risk, medical research shows that there are benefits to a controlled fasting approach focusing more on calorie restriction, including decreased risk for cancer, heart problems, diabetes and immune deficiencies. However, experts recommend consulting a doctor before using fasting as diet regimen.

Meditation encompasses hundreds of techniques and strategies with the goal of obtaining clarity of mind. Some practice meditation as a part of their religious practices, while others believe it to have holistic benefits, helping to keep the body and mind healthy.

The term is very broad however. In fact, an article in Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, published in 2010 by the American Psychological Association, stated that there has been no widespread acceptance of any one clear definition for the word “meditation,” with no persistent agreement on the term throughout any literature covering the topic.

Yoga
Yoga is one form of meditation that has increased in popularity over the years. The word “yoga” stems from “yuj” in Sanskrit, meaning to join or unite. The purpose of yoga practices in that sense is to join the mind and body, unifying them for the benefit of overall health.

Yoga consists of a variety of body positions and stretches, known as poses, in combination with breathing techniques. Some commonly seen positions include the praying mantis, downward dog and the lotus pose.

Concentrative
Concentrative meditation is a means of stilling the mind by focusing on your breathing and an image or sound (known as a mantra). The goal is to increase awareness and clarity, narrowing our focus to a specific field of “vision.” The concentrative method is a great way to reduce stress, anxiety and nervousness, especially in the moment. All you have to do is stop, get comfortable and concentrate on your breathing. You’ll find that doing so can quickly calm you.

Mindful
Mindful meditation has the goal of learning to better understand our senses but refraining to react to them. You work to become more aware of smells, tastes, sounds, images and thoughts, without reacting to them. Unlike the concentrative method, where you focus on only one aspect of the world, the mindful meditation method has the goal of taking in the world as a whole to gain a broader perspective without reacting to everything that goes on around you.

Withdrawal is perhaps the hardest part of going through Drug Rehab. In fact, quitting any drug, whether it is cocaine, nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, or narcotics can be one of the most difficult things a person has to do. There are both physical and emotional ramifications of stopping drug use and the process is stressful.

Many people undergoing treatment for substance abuse feel alone, and may struggle with depression and anxiety on top of withdrawal symptoms. During the initial phase of detoxification, will power is of paramount importance, and the support of friends, family, and doctors can help ease the stress.

There are many ways to make withdrawal easier. Traditional Chinese Medicine can be an effective complement to more conventional treatments. Chinese medical providers can provide both emotional support, and help reduce physical symptoms of withdrawal through the use of acupuncture, herbs, and other treatments.

Acupuncture is effective in alleviating some of the cravings and physical pain of drug withdrawal which is why it has been used for centuries to help with nicotine, alcohol, and drug addiction. In the U.S. and other western cultures acupuncture has gained attention for it’s effectiveness in dealing with crack cocaine addiction.

A Chinese medical practitioner might work in conjunction with counselors and western doctors to prescribe herbs that can help with symptoms of withdrawal. They might also work with the patient to incorporate dietary therapy and lifestyle counseling into the rehab program.

Yoga and Tai Chi have shown to be effective in helping addicts deal with the emotional stress of withdrawal. These practices build self-esteem and confidence, which can help strengthen will power and avoid relapse. Meditation can also aid in helping the patient learn self-empowerment, which can help prevent future problems.

It is advisable for those undergoing addiction to consider these alternative methods to balance their treatment program.

The next time you fall ill, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to check if your personality had something to do with it. According to traditional Chinese medicine, personalities give important clues to the state of one’s physical health and tendency to fall ill. A personality-based assessment is becoming increasingly common in many alternative modern health medicine techniques.

As per Chinese thinking, every person has five elements in their birth chart. The relative weight of each element will determine the personality, and since all elements are present, a person will always have a mixed personality. The five elements are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, and Earth. Each element has its good and bad sides.

Metal is the element that signifies righteousness and intellectual sharpness. Metal persons are detail-oriented perfectionists, and pursue their goals with single-minded devotion. Since Metal types are prone to respiratory illnesses and eczema, they are advised to take up aerobic exercises. Water types are known as deep thinkers, and are generally considered to be far ahead of their time. Such persons tend to be philosophical, and enjoy solitude and tranquility. They are likely to develop problems of the kidney and bladder if they do not have an adequate liquid intake or socializing opportunities.

Wood persons have Type A personalities, and are high on vitality, energy, and ambition. They are extremely driven and focused, and quite likely to assume positions of leadership or athletic supremacy. Wood personalities are therefore prone to stress and tension related ailments, and would do well to learn meditation.

Fire persons are the life of any group they’re in, and are fun, sociable people who love to read and travel. They are extremely gifted communicators. Fire types can maintain their health by taking time to nurture themselves, and limiting the intake of spices. Earth persons are compassionate nurturers, who are also natural peacemakers owing to their empathy. They are likely to suffer from weight gain, food allergies, and fatigue, and must learn to maintain the right balance in their food habits and emotions.

Knowing your personality type is the first step to making traditional Chinese medicine work effectively for you.

There are countless of new creams and potions coming out onto the market every year but there is something that is very likely in your own kitchen or cupboard that has been known as a health and beauty staples for both men and women for thousands of years. Honey! Yes, honey. You might not think of it but honey has been known as a beauty and health aid for some of the most famous people of all time. Cleopatra is thought to have used it as a mask and in medieval Germany people even used honey and beeswax as a form of currency.

There are many reasons for honey’s longevity in history. It has been used as a topical ointment in the treatment of wounds and scars for thousands of years. Honey is natural antiseptic and has many anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties which make it a perfect topical solution in the aid of these wounds. And who hasn’t been told to drink tea with honey when experiencing a cold or cough.
Honey is also known to be a natural mood stabilizer and energy booster. Due to the way our body metabolizes honey it becomes an instant energy boost that dissipates naturally rather than spiking our mood and energy such as a spoon full of sugar. If you need energy boost then try a spoon full of sugar and you won’t experience the crash and burn feeling many other energy enhancers tend to give you.

There are many studies which suggest honey is a natural weight loss enhancer. It is known as an appetite suppressant because it boost your energy so therefore you are less inclined to reach for the late day snack of sugar and ruin your diet in the process.
The health benefits of honey cannot be ignored and even if you are a skeptic then try a spoonful of honey everyday either way the taste can’t be beat.

There are several good things about having health and car insurance. Having coverage can be the difference between being able to make it through an emergency and being inconvenienced or ill for an extended period of time. With insurance, your provider will pay for a certain portion of expenses you incur because of an illness or a car accident. Why is this a good thing? Not many people set money aside every month.

When a tragedy strikes, it can quickly deplete what emergency funds you do have. Often, emergency expenses exceed your monthly income. What happens when you total a $43,000 car? You have still have to pay off the loan, and you need a replacement car. Insurance covers the gap. Health insurance works the same way. When you need a medical procedure that costs thousands of dollars, you pay your co-pay and your percentage of the bill. Your insurance company pays for the majority of the expense. This can bring a $4,500 medical expense down to an affordable few hundred dollars.

Insurance also protects your assets. Say you’re throwing a party at your house and someone falls down the stairs. If the person doesn’t have medical insurance, you will have to pay for the expense because the injury occurred on your property, unless you can prove the person acted irresponsibly. While your health insurance won’t cover the expenses, your homeowners insurance might. If you’re in a car accident that injures another person, your coverage will pay for that person’s medical expenses.

Many people fail to realize all the ways insurance helps and protects a person. Once you realize the benefits to coverage, you can find the policy that works best for you. You can pick a higher deductible and a lower monthly payment or a higher monthly payments with a lower deductible. Regardless of the policy, you can get the protection you need.

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese Medical practice where fine needles are inserted into specific parts of the body for the purpose of curing an illness. When the needles pierce through the body, they release blocked energy which is responsible for causing imbalances in health. This alternative medicine technique has been practiced in China for thousands of years and has been used to effectively treat health problems.

During an acupuncture session, the patient will lie flat on the table while the practitioner will insert needles into the body at various points. These points are gateways for the body’s energy flow. Acupuncture points redirect the energy to areas that are deficient. The needles inserted will be at an angle of 15 degree to 90 degrees. These needles can be manipulated by hand and they will be twisted depending on what the practitioner considers as right. Other motions that can be used include vibration, heating, cooling, and gentle electrification.

What can acupuncture help to treat? Acupuncture can strengthen the body’s immune system. This makes the body strong and also resistant to various illnesses such as infections, flu, and cold and so on. It can be used to treat psychological disorders such as phobias, eating disorders, anxiety, addictions and so on. Studies show that depression can be cured through acupuncture.

After surgery, acupuncture is highly effective in increasing vitality and body energy. Those with hypertension will find acupuncture to help them to control the problem and also give better energy levels. Today, everyone is interested in looking slim, but losing weight is not an easy task. Acupuncture is highly effective in bringing down weight by suppressing the appetite.

Those who have to take drugs for fighting off pain will find acupuncture to help reduce the need to take them frequently. It improves body circulation and in doing so energizes the body and strengthens it to fight off diseases. It has been noted that where various health medicines have failed to give adequate treatment, this form of Chinese medicine has proven to be quite effective.

When did it become standard practice for health professionals to issue prescriptions for the symptoms of an ailment rather than addressing the actual problem?

It seems that Americans have become inured to the concept of the “source” ailment. They are quick to recognize and treat symptoms, but overall, the underlying problems are overlooked. Hence, over-the-counter medicines are used at frightening rates to “fix” health issues—but what is really fixed?

Pills for everyday symptoms—headache, sneezing, cough, fever, allergies, fatigue, and so on—have become commonplace. If you have an ailment and can’t make it to your doctor right away, chances are good that you can run to the supermarket and get something to tide you over for a while. When you do get to the doctor, he or she will prescribe another medication. You will stand in another line, to see another druggist, to take yet another pill.

Good health is a precious commodity, and it is fortified by good living, good exercise, and good food. Unfortunately, society approves of pharmaceuticals as the general be-all and end-all of health maintenance, and the dollars spent annually on prescription drugs prove it. Health professionals have been taught that most ailments can only be addressed with drugs, to the point that a well-rounded diet of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean meats has been ruled out as a solution to anything.

Medicines have their place in helping people recover. In an alcohol rehab center or a drug rehab center, pharmaceuticals used to manage withdrawal symptoms make a great deal of sense. Pharmaceuticals have their place in situations of trauma and severe disease. However, the general belief that disease is best assuaged by drugs is startling, especially when the most basic tenets of healthy living are pushed aside.

“Take personal responsibility” is the modern day mantra of so-called life coaches. Taking responsibility for each area of your life including health, career, and relationships will make you successful and a contributing member of society. There is increased awareness of one’s influence on one’s own environment. In this era of mutated superbugs, our personal hygiene has an impact on other people’s health and the amount of time and money they will waste on medicines. Corporate social responsibility is on the rise too. It’s not unusual to see advertisements from beer companies advocating responsible drinking and encouraging only people who are age 21 and over to drink.

Smoking is connected to various diseases including cancer and heart ailments. There is ample evidence that passive smoking, the inhalation of secondhand smoke, pretty much causes the same level of harm that active smoking does. However, new technological advancements like electronic smokes help people to indulge in their smoking habits without creating smoke that can harm the people around them. They are touted as the healthier, smokeless, and odorless version of traditional cigarettes. These electronic cigarette kits deliver different levels of nicotine in the form of vapor and give the “smoker” a better experience. People nearby need not worry about passive smoking at all!

At the end of the day, your health is in your hands…Literally! When care is taken to improve hygiene and when one is concerned about the ecosystem in which one lives, there are bound to be improvements in public health. With increased social responsibility exhibited by individuals, corporations, and communities at large, there’s a better chance of combating diseases. Prescribing medicine is a reactive step that’s taken after someone is sick. The goal should be to prevent people from getting sick in the first place. That is the best way to fight the newer strains of the numerous diseases that are emerging around the world.

If you’re a parent, one of your biggest nightmares is probably your child becoming ill and you not being able to get him the care he needs. Unfortunately, that’s a reality for some parents who don’t have a lot of money and aren’t sure where their next dollar is coming from. If their child gets sick, they have no insurance to use, so they try to avoid the doctor. Sometimes that’s not possible, and they end up with medical bills that they aren’t sure how to pay. You can end up in that situation all too easily, but there are options available to you.

If you have friends and family members who can help you, consider borrowing from them to pay the medical bill, so you don’t have to pay late charges and have something negative on your credit report. You can also dip into savings if you have any, or check out emergency loans if you have a steady, verifiable job. No matter what you choose to do, your child needs medical care if he’s sick. You can always find a way to pay the bills off, but don’t let your child’s health suffer. Take him to the doctor and let the doctor know you have no insurance and little money.

Ask if there are any discounts available or charities that can help. Ask about payment plans and other arrangements. Depending on the doctor, there might be a lot of options or only a few. The important thing to remember is that you won’t know unless you ask. People can’t be turned away when they seriously need medical care just because they don’t have any money. If your child is sick, be sure to seek treatment. You can figure out how to pay the bill once you know that your little one is going to be all right.

The town of Baoding in China can be credited with what is possibly the cheapest and simplest health medicine ever. Baoding balls, originally called Iron balls, were first made in the time of the Ming Dynasty and have been used ever since by all classes of people to improve overall health and dexterity.

It is important to remember that the Oriental perception of the human body is very different from that of Western medicine. The importance of Baoding balls in Chinese medicine is rooted in the same theories that support acupuncture. The human body is seen as an interconnected set of systems; therefore ailments that manifest themselves in one part may have actually originated in another.

Modern-day Baoding balls comprise of one hollow sphere within the other which chimes when moved. Lesser sound while using a pair is taken to be a sign of increasing dexterity. The balls in a variety of diameters to suit different hand sizes. Lightweight balls are used to aid recovery from hand and arm injuries.

The most basic exercise is to rotate a pair within the palm of a hand, gradually increasing the speed and minimizing contact between the balls. As skills increase, the number of balls used can also be increased. Baoding balls gained popularity as a meditation aid and tool for improved health, as they are believed to stimulate vital acupuncture points on the hands.

According to Chinese medicine, Baoding balls improve the flow of Chi, or vital energy, when used over a period of time. This is because they keep the meridians, or pathways, in the body free of damage and blocks, thus preventing stagnation and illness. The nerve endings of the fingertips are massaged and stimulated by the regular exercise, and this positively impacts the vital organs of the body connected to these nerve endings.

Baoding balls are a small investment, but a very effective alternative to expensive therapies. Used regularly, they can help combat age-related degeneration, physical ailments, worry, and stress.

A cure for the common cold is still a fantasy, but some alternative medicine systems are better equipped to handle those bouts of sniffling and sneezing better than others. Modern health medicines suggest many ways to keep a cold at bay, but traditional Chinese medicine is particularly effective at fighting a cold even after it makes its entry.

Chinese medicine’s understanding of the common cold is in line with its philosophy of energy medicine. The common cold is seen as an invasion of Wind in the body. Accordingly, there are two major categories of colds; Wind cold and Wind heat. The former is characterized by chills and sensitivity to cold. Sneezing and a runny nose are also associated with Wind cold. Wind heat, on the other hand, is more like a fever. Coughing, thick mucus, irritability, and a rapid pulse are features of Wind heat.

Like other Eastern medical systems, Chinese medicine targets the immune system, unlike Western medicine which tries to eliminate the pathogen. The reasoning is that a strong Chi, or vital energy, will make it more difficult for a pathogen to take control or worsen.

For Wind cold conditions, sweating therapy is recommended to flush out the toxins from the body. A good supplement is miso soup with spring onions and ginger. Ephedra concoctions with ginger and cinnamon are also prescribed by practitioners. However, this must be taken only under medical supervision, as Ephedra is a very potent drug. Green tea is used if the cold is accompanied by nasal and head congestion.

In case of Wind heat, herbal formulas containing chrysanthemum, peppermint, mulberry, and licorice are prescribed. Ginseng and caffeinated drinks are strictly prohibited at this time as they can worsen the condition. Yin Qiao San is a very popular Chinese remedy which is also used to treat influenza and tonsillitis.

Acupuncture is also good for immediate relief from the common cold. Points along the lung and large intestine meridians are targeted, as they are directly linked to the well-being of the immune system. Like any other treatment, Chinese herbs should be taken only as per the instructions of a qualified practitioner.

Migraine victims are a harried lot. Managing their condition, while simultaneously working or going about their daily chores is next to impossible. As a result, migraine is the leading cause of employee absenteeism in the U.S., with 157 million workdays lost each year. Moreover, medication and related expenses eat up approximately 50 billion dollars a year.

Conventional medication can only give temporary relief from migraine, so many sufferers are turning to alternative treatments, diets, and lifestyle changes to treat the root cause. Traditional Chinese medicine has come as a ray of hope to many, as it focuses on a more holistic approach to curing an ailment. Acupuncture particularly has come under the spotlight as an effective treatment for migraine. Some might be inclined to dismiss it as just another health medicine fad, but it helps to remember that acupuncture as a method of healing is more than 2000 years old.

Acupuncture involves inserting fine, metallic needles at specific points of the body. One of the reasons for its rising popularity is that the effects are cumulative; a patient would need fewer sessions with the passage of time. Acupuncture works by stimulating the release of endorphins, which provide relief from pain.

Many patients suffering from migraine undergo acupuncture to complement their current medications. Studies have shown that in most cases, patients report a significant reduction in the frequency and intensity of headaches after acupuncture. Such improvement translates into huge savings for individuals, employers, and economies, as migraine patients need no longer be restricted by their condition.

Acupuncture is fast gaining ground as a treatment for chronic pain, especially for headaches. The system has a growing user base in the U.S. Acupuncture is already well entrenched in Germany. Nearly all private insurers there reimburse acupuncture treatment costs.

Migraine can soon be a thing of the past if one uses the services of a licensed acupuncturist or traditional Chinese practitioner. Acupuncture, when done correctly without re-using needles, has practically no side-effects. It is also less expensive than most other migraine treatments.

Chronic back pain is one of the most common reasons why people seek medical help. Apart from making daily living difficult, it can progressively worsen one’s quality of life if left untreated. Back pain is also one of the leading causes of lost workdays.

Most of the time, back pain is caused by sprains and strains. The resulting rip in the muscle or ligament, or stretch injury can cause intense pain. Such injury is usually the result of poor posture, improper lifting of weights, etc. Sciatica, which is the irritation of the sciatic nerve, causes radiating pain in the back and legs. Herniated discs that push against vertebral walls are another culprit.

Traditional Chinese medicine is fast emerging as a favored alternative to Western medicine. It is also preferred above many other forms of health medicine. Acupuncture is the most commonly used Chinese therapy for the treatment of back pain. While many medical experts hesitate to call it a complete cure, most agree that acupuncture provides significant relief.

Traditional Chinese medicine identifies three major types of back pain; Deficiency pain, damp-induced pain, and Chi or blood stagnation pain. Deficiency pain is usually associated with ageing. It is dull and improves with rest. Damp-induced pain is worst in the morning and gets aggravated in cold or wet weather. It is sometimes accompanied by numbness and swelling. Stagnation pain typically accompanies a sprain or stretch, and worsens with rest. This pain is also recurring in nature.

Acupuncture treatments will be frequent initially, and then lessen in frequency. Needles inserted at vital points are believed to promote the flow of Chi, or vital energy, thereby bringing relief from pain and illness. In the case of back pain, the needles are often applied in the distal method, away from the site of pain. Herbal remedies are usually administered during the course of treatment to speed up the healing process.

Chronic pain may require a longer treatment time, but acupuncture is certainly worth the time and effort if you’re seeking lasting relief from back pain.
